LUANDA, Angola, Oct. 10, 2023 — In a strategic move, Boeing [NYSE: BA] and TAAG Angola Airlines have jointly announced TAAG’s acquisition of four eco-friendly Boeing 787 Dreamliner widebody jets, marking a significant milestone in the African carrier’s fleet expansion.

Eduardo Fairen, CEO of TAAG Angola Airlines, emphasized the carrier’s commitment to collaborating with world-renowned manufacturers to curate a diverse fleet capable of catering to various flight profiles, including their intercontinental routes. Fairen stated, “Our objective is to partner with the world’s leading aircraft manufacturers to establish a multi-type fleet, ensuring that we possess the right aircraft for each specific flight category, particularly our long-haul connections. The introduction of the 787 Dreamliner aligns perfectly with our vision for contemporary, size-efficient, and eco-conscious equipment. It will gradually replace our existing widebody fleet while enhancing the overall passenger experience.”

Anbessie Yitbarek, Boeing’s Vice President of Commercial Sales and Marketing for Africa, highlighted the game-changing role of the 787 Dreamliner in TAAG Angola Airlines’ expansion strategy. “By integrating the 787 Dreamliner, TAAG Angola Airlines gains the ability to explore new routes and expand its international reach,” said Yitbarek. “The Dreamliner sets the industry benchmark for efficiency and passenger comfort, directly supporting the carrier’s fleet modernization objectives.”

At present, TAAG Angola Airlines operates a fleet comprising five 777-300ER (Extended Range) aircraft, three 777-200ERs, and seven 737-700s, facilitating services to 12 destinations across Africa, Europe, South America, and China.

Boeing’s Commercial Market Outlook for Africa forecasts a substantial requirement for 1,025 aircraft across the continent over the next two decades. African air traffic growth is anticipated to surge at an impressive rate of 7.4%, ranking third globally, surpassing the global average growth rate of 6.1%.

Since its introduction to commercial service in 2011, the 787 Dreamliner family has introduced over 370 new nonstop routes worldwide. Renowned for its exceptional efficiency, the 787 Dreamliner reduces fuel consumption and emissions by an impressive 25% when compared to the aircraft it replaces. Passengers can anticipate an enhanced travel experience, courtesy of the Dreamliner’s expansive windows, improved cabin humidity, lower cabin altitude for increased comfort, capacious overhead compartments, ambient LED lighting, and advanced turbulence-sensing technology that ensures a smoother journey.
