In pursuit of achieving net-zero goals, Lufthansa Cargo has unveiled a strategic blueprint to shape the trajectory of sustainable cargo infrastructure. The cargo subsidiary of Lufthansa has outlined a comprehensive approach encompassing four key measures aimed at transforming its cargo sector. The core focus of these measures includes embracing digitization and eCommerce advancements, while maintaining a steadfast commitment to sustainability throughout the coming decades.
Aligned with the priorities set by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) regarding digitization, Lufthansa is actively ushering freight operations into the digital age. Collaborating with long-standing partner Kühne+Nagel, the carrier introduced a groundbreaking initiative to establish “paperless lanes” connecting Europe and Asia. By digitizing the entire cargo booking and transportation process, this initiative has paved the way for future digital innovations that streamline cargo operations.
In response to the surge in eCommerce during the COVID-19 pandemic, Lufthansa Cargo is strategically revamping Frankfurt Airport (FRA) into a dedicated eCommerce hub. Working in tandem with its subsidiaries heyworld and CB Customs Broker, this transformation seeks to harness the potential of eCommerce growth. Lufthansa’s ambitious goal is to position Frankfurt as a frontrunner in this domain by providing comprehensive solutions that encompass shipping, customs clearance, and seamless further transport for eCommerce shipments.
Sustainability remains at the forefront of Lufthansa’s plans for the future. The carrier is resolutely committed to reducing its carbon footprint by 50% by 2030, ultimately transitioning to fully carbon-neutral operations by 2050. Notably, Lufthansa has made substantial investments in Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) to align with the EU’s ReFuelEU regulation, which mandates SAF quotas. The airline has set a target to incorporate at least 2% biofuel for its jets by 2025, scaling up to 6% by the end of the decade. This strategic move to SAF usage significantly curtails CO2 emissions by up to 80%, and Lufthansa Cargo is currently utilizing 2.1% SAF in its operations.
Incorporating the potential of digitization, Lufthansa Cargo acknowledges the role it plays in enhancing sustainable cargo practices. This includes leveraging modernization of the fleet and harnessing AI tools to optimize fuel efficiency. Nicole Mies, Head of Communication and Corporate Responsibility at Lufthansa Cargo, underscores the pivotal role that digitization can play in advancing sustainable cargo operations.
As Lufthansa Cargo continues to propel its initiatives forward, these measures collectively underscore the carrier’s resolute commitment to a sustainable, digitized, and innovative future for cargo aviation.
