IndiGo, the prominent Indian airline, is reportedly edging closer to a substantial order for 25 Boeing 787 widebody aircraft. With aspirations to expand its international footprint and offer a wider range of destinations beyond the subcontinent, IndiGo has initiated discussions with both Boeing and Airbus. While considering Boeing’s 787 family of jets, the airline hasn’t ruled out Airbus’s A330neo series.
Insiders familiar with the matter have indicated that IndiGo is inclined towards selecting the Boeing 787, although a final verdict has yet to be reached. At present, IndiGo has not provided an official response on this matter.
Deliberations between IndiGo and both Boeing and Airbus regarding its widebody fleet strategy have been ongoing since March. Embracing modern, fuel-efficient, and high-capacity aircraft is pivotal to IndiGo’s continued expansion into untapped markets. The airline has recently introduced new routes to Africa and the Asia-Pacific region, while establishing partnerships with European carriers. With a steadfast aim to double its capacity by the end of the decade, diversifying its route network is an integral component of IndiGo’s growth strategy.
Furthermore, IndiGo’s recent collaboration with Turkish Airlines has yielded additional advantages. This codeshare agreement has facilitated the commencement of IndiGo’s international operations by leasing a Boeing 777, complete with pilots, from Turkish Airlines. However, owning and operating its aircraft presents an opportunity for IndiGo to optimize costs. Yet, given the extensive order backlogs at Boeing and Airbus, the acquisition of brand-new aircraft remains a few years away. To expedite this process, IndiGo might consider partnering with lessors possessing available inventory or nearby delivery slots.
While the Boeing 777 will continue to serve as the backbone of its international operations, IndiGo is also keen on capitalizing on robust demand within India. Despite enjoying a significant market share of 58%, India’s domestic aviation landscape is intensely competitive due to new entrants like Akasa. To stay ahead, IndiGo is determined to enhance its domestic capacity twofold.
This expansion will be propelled by a substantial fleet of narrowbody aircraft, complementing any potential widebody acquisitions. IndiGo’s presence at the Paris Air Show this year resulted in a record-breaking order for Airbus A320 aircraft. This order, comprising both A320neo and A321neo variants, underscores the airline’s preference for the larger A321neo. Additionally, IndiGo already holds orders for the A321XLR variant, paving the way for extended range operations.
IndiGo’s historical affinity for the Airbus A320 family is evident through its successive orders over the years. Commencing in 2005 with an order for 100 A320s, the airline reinforced its commitment with an additional 180 units in 2011. In a remarkable display of confidence, IndiGo ordered another 250 A320neos merely three years later. Subsequently, the airline confirmed an order for 300 more in 2019. Together with its recent acquisition, IndiGo’s fleet is set to encompass 1,330 A320 aircraft.
IndiGo’s deliberations on its widebody fleet and its ongoing commitment to the A320 series collectively reflect the airline’s strategic approach to sustained growth and enhanced connectivity across regional and international markets.
